The European commission has formally adopted the first "implementing measure" under the EU's product ecodesign (EuP) directive. The new regulation will put a mandatory limit on the power consumption of standby functions on various consumer appliances.
Andris Piebalgs said the new standards "conclude the commission's year of energy efficiency in the best way". The content of the regulation was decided by a committee of member state experts in the summer and then scrutinised by the European parliament (EE 08/07/08). Details will be published in the EU's official journal imminently*.
