EU hammers out sustainable pesticides use deal

Governments and MEPs struck a second-reading agreement on draft legislation on the sustainable use of pesticides on Wednesday night.

EU member states beat off parliamentary demands for a quantified EU-wide goal for cutting pesticide use, as well as risks or impacts. MEPs won a clause requiring member states to set quantified national targets for reducing pesticide use, but without specifying what level such use reduction targets should be set at (EE 29/04/08).
