EU issues guidelines on CHP calculation method

Guidelines for applying an EU method for calculating quantities of electricity produced from combined heat and power generation (CHP) have been published in the bloc's official journal.

The method is specified in the EU's 2004 cogeneration directive (EE 25/04/08). Under the law, electricity from high-efficiency CHP plants must be quantified in guarantees of origin delivered by suppliers.

The guidelines clarify procedures and definitions laid down in annex II of the directive. Member states are allowed to continue to use their own definitions until 2010 without verifying that their calculation methods fulfil the directive's criteria.
