Around half of all recyclable waste in the EU – worth more than €5bn annually – is currently being disposed of in landfills and waste incinerators, according to a new report published by Friends of the Earth on Wednesday.
Each year the EU disposes of €5.25bn worth of recyclables such as paper, glass, plastics, aluminium and steel, the authors estimate. If this waste was recycled, the equivalent of 148 million tonnes of CO2 emissions could be avoided annually, they add.
