Council confirms weak stance on ship dismantling

EU member states should ratify a new international convention on ship dismantling "as a matter of priority", environment ministers said on Wednesday. But they stopped short of calling for its early implementation in Europe or measures for going beyond it.

The ministers adopted a resolution that closely resembles an earlier version whose main elements were unveiled by ENDS last week. They called on the European Commission to identify potential inconsistencies between the new convention, EU waste shipment rules and the Basel convention.
