UK issues draft rules banning phosphate detergents

The UK's environment ministry (DEFRA) has published draft rules that would ban from 2015 sales of domestic laundry detergents containing phosphate. Phosphate concentrations must not exceed 0.4% by weight, according to the ministry.

DEFRA expects the rules to be adopted in April 2010 following a final consultation launched on Thursday. It ruled out a plan to reduce phosphate use through a voluntary industry agreement following a first consultation last year.
