Commission bans Dutch tax breaks for ceramics

The European Commission has banned a Dutch energy tax exemption for ceramic producers using natural gas, arguing energy tax breaks that "merely subsidise selected companies' operating costs without pursuing any environmental objective are illegal".

Such measures can be approved if they "further, at least indirectly, environmental objectives" in line with requirements in EU guidelines on environmental state aid, the commission said. The decision was announced on Tuesday following an investigation.
