Sharp EC reaction to new waste crisis in Naples

EU environment commissioner Janez Potocnik has warned that the European Commission is considering "further steps" against Italy in light of the current waste disposal crisis in and around Naples, which has sparked more than a week of rioting.

The situation is "very close to the crisis which exploded in 2007, and led the commission to open an infringement procedure against the Italian Republic", Mr Potocnik said on Saturday. The Campania region still has no waste management plan and the only incinerator there is not functioning properly, he added.
