Agreement reached on sourcing ITER funds

EU negotiators have agreed a deal on the additional funding needed by the international nuclear fusion project ITER in 2012 and 2013. Some of the €1.3bn will come from funds originally allocated to the natural resources and administration budgets.

The 2012 budget, agreed in November, already includes €100m for ITER. The new arrangement between the European Commission, Council of Ministers and MEPs will fill the remaining gap with €360m raised through the normal 2013 budget procedure, €450m from the 2011 natural resources budgets and €390m assigned to administration.
