European paper-makers have promised to phase out use of mineral oil-based printing inks and processing chemicals in packaging materials that come into contact with food. The pledge follows studies showing that the substances can migrate into the food.
The two organisations making the pledge – the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) and the International Confederation of Paper and Board Converters in Europe (CITPA) – say they are acting to counter concerns even though no toxicological studies have yet shown the effects of the oils on human health.
