Commission plans to cut vehicle noise by 25%

The European Commission has put forward a draft regulation introducing stricter noise levels passenger cars, vans, buses and lorries. Existing limits would go down in two stages, reducing noise emissions from vehicles by about a quarter.

As outlined at a meeting in May, limits for cars, vans and buses will first drop by 2 decibels two years after entry into force, expected in 2013/14, and by another 2 dB(A) three years later. Limits for lorries would first fall by 1 dB(A) and then 2 dB(A).
