Brussels to consult on marine litter target

The European Commission is considering proposing an EU-wide target for reducing marine litter, in line with a Rio+20 pledge to significantly cut marine litter by 2025

The European Commission is considering proposing an EU-wide target for reducing marine litter, in line with a Rio+20 pledge to significantly cut marine litter by 2025. A consultation will begin shortly, it said on Friday.

At the moment, it adds, there is insufficient data on marine litter and on national reduction measures to recommend a course of action at EU level.

Member states had until 15 October to report on environmental indicators and targets to reduce marine pollution. But twelve countries have missed the deadline.
