EC backs first voluntary agreement on ecodesign

The commission has endorsed the first voluntary deal on the ecodesign of products, which sets energy efficiency requirements for ‘complex’ set-top boxes

The European Commission has endorsed the first voluntary industry agreement on the ecodesign of products, which sets energy efficiency requirements for ‘complex’ set-top boxes, also known as receivers for pay TV.

The agreement, which covers about 90% of the market, focuses on power consumption during use. It will save 6.5 terawatt hours of electricity by 2016 and lead to energy cost savings of €884m, according to an impact assessment published last week alongside the commission decision.
