The European Commission plans to propose next week stricter limits on contaminants in drinking water to bring them in line with the latest World Health Organisation guidelines, an official from the EU executive told ENDS on Tuesday.

The official from the EU executive’s environment directorate added the revision to the 1998 drinking water directive – slated for publication on 31 January – could include “new parameters” for control, but would not confirm whether these included limits on level of microplastic particles in tap water.
