MEPs and green campaigners have urged the European Commission to launch an infringement procedure against Bulgaria so that major new infrastructure projects are moved away from two biodiversity rich areas that are designated under the EU’s Habitats Directive.
A joint letter from nine MEPs has urged Karmenu Vella, the environment commissioner, to identify the impact of a new motorway and construction on the two areas “as a matter of urgency and launch an own EU inquiry in both cases”.
