MEPs call for waste incineration funding ban

EU funding for regional development and cohesion should not be used to subsidise the incineration of unsorted municipal waste, the European Parliament's environment committee said on Thursday.

EU funding for regional development and cohesion should not be used to subsidise the incineration of unsorted municipal waste, the European Parliament's environment committee said on Thursday.

The committee's opinion, which supports provisions in a European Commission proposal on the use of EU Cohesion and Regional Development funds post-2020, will be taken into account as the parliament forms it final position.

The campaign group Zero Waste Europe had previously warned such funding was widely used to finance incinerators and waste-to-energy plants, thereby reducing the incentive to collect municipal waste separately for recycling.
