New restrictions on the use of the toxic flame retardant decaBDE will apply from 2 March 2019, but campaigners questioned the extended exemption periods for certain industries.

The new regulation, published in the EU’s Official Journal last week, restricts the manufacture and sale of the chemical, included in annex XVII of the REACH chemicals regime. The rules also extend to its use as a constituent of other substances, in mixtures, or in articles in a concentration equal to or greater than 0.1% by weight.
