MEPs say ETS must react to other climate policies

There should be no “trade off” between the EU emissions trading scheme and energy efficiency policy, the centre-left S&D group’s lead negotiator on the ETS reform said on Tuesday

There should be no “trade off” between the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS) and energy efficiency policy, the centre-left S&D group’s lead negotiator on the ETS reform said on Tuesday.

“If demand for allowances is reduced [by the] Energy Efficiency Directive, this might require additional cancellations – let’s do it, then,” Jytte Guteland said.

The EU lawmaker was speaking at a policy forum in Brussels where the green group Carbon Market Watch presented a policy paper calling for ETS reforms to take account of the effects of other legislation. This includes proposed reforms to the energy efficiency law and renewables support to avoid depressing carbon prices.
