A wide coalition of environmental organisations launched on Thursday a concerted campaign calling for a European coal phaseout by 2030, and issued a five-point policy plan for EU lawmakers.

The ‘Europe Beyond Coal’ platform is demanding an end to subsidies for coal mining and state support for coal-fired power stations. A proposed limit on capacity payments to plants that emit less than 550g of CO2 per kilowatt hour of power generated should be tightened and implemented immediately, they argue.
