Mass deployment of cheap wind and solar electricity sources in the UK and Germany by 2040 will boost demand for flexible backup including Nordic hydropower to balance supply and demand, a new report has said.

By 2040, the proportion of electrical energy produced by renewable sources could more than double from 2017 levels, reaching 63% in the UK and to 74% in Germany, said the study released on Tuesday by Bloomberg New Energy Finance for UK power management firm Eaton and the Renewable Energy Association (REA).
