EU Social Democrats call for sustainable CAP post-2020

The S&D group in the European Parliament has called for forthcoming CAP reforms to drive a shift to sustainable farming to mitigate climate change and halt biodiversity loss

The S&D group in the European Parliament called on Thursday for forthcoming reforms to the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy to drive a shift to sustainable farming to mitigate climate change and halt biodiversity loss.

The Parliament’s second largest political bloc released its position paper as the European Commission prepares to present a white paper outlining its proposals for post-2020 CAP reform.

“All the reforms to the CAP since the 1990s have given the market free reign, with devastating consequences for farmers, the environment and rural economies,” said lawmaker Éric Andrieu, S&D spokesperson on agriculture.
