Medical and environmental groups have called on the European Commission to propose specific legislation to address the threat posed by pharmaceutical products when it presents a strategy paper early next year.

“Pharmaceutical pollution is an unrestricted cross-border phenomenon that affects all EU countries,” they wrote in a joint letter to EU environment commissioner Karmenu Vella on the eve of ‘European Antibiotic Awareness Day’ on 18 November.
