New European rules on the production and marketing of organic produce are set to take effect in January 2021 after national governments endorsed on Monday a provisional deal struck with MEPs in June, bringing an end to over three years of political wrangling.

“What everyone agreed on was that the current rules – which are 20 years old now – were not fit for purpose and were likely to hinder rather than help the development of this growing sector,” said EU agriculture commissioner Phil Hogan as he welcomed the move.
