The UK’s acquiescence to a move by Brussels to protect the EU emissions trading system (ETS) from a no-deal Brexit could be a “positive sign" for the country to remain part of the scheme, an EU official said on Friday.

“The UK authorities volunteered to change their legislation before January 2018, and I think that is the best we could have imagined,” the high-ranking European Commission official said at a closed policy forum in Brussels.
