WWF urges EU to get tough on national climate plans

The failure of most EU governments to produce compulsory biannual ‘low-carbon development strategies’ highlights the need for strong enforcement under forthcoming energy union governance regulation

The failure of a majority of EU governments to comply with a pre-Paris Agreement requirement to produce compulsory biannual ‘low-carbon development strategies’ (LCDSs) highlights the need for strong enforcement under forthcoming new energy union governance regulation, the WWF said on Monday.

A survey by the pressure group suggested that only 13 of 28 member states have produced or updated their plans this year as required by the Monitoring Mechanism Regulation’ (MMR) agreed by national governments in January 2013, and that only seven of them were in line with the pre-Paris goal of 80-95% emissions cuts by 2050.
