A round-up of the main meetings and agreements expected from January to June

28-29 January - UK environment protection agencies to host plenary meeting of EU network on the implementation and enforcement of environmental law (IMPEL).

6 March - European Environmental Bureau seminar on how environmental protection can help regional development and regeneration. UK government-funded.

23 March - Environment Council (Provisional agenda)

Common positions expected on:

* Amended council decision on monitoring mechanism for CO2 emissions

* Amended regulation establishing the European Environment Agency

* Draft directive on waste landfill

* Draft directive on emissions from light motor vehicles

* Draft directive on VOC emissions resulting from industrial solvent use

Initial debates expected on:

* Draft directive setting air quality limits for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulates and lead

* Draft directive on the sulphur content of liquid fuels

* Draft directive setting out a framework water policy

* Recommendation on keeping of wild animals in zoos

Other:

* Conclusions on climate change (see story this issue)

* Preparations for fourth meeting of parties to UN biodiversity convention

* Preparations for meeting of UN Commission on Sustainable Development in April

23-24 April - Informal Environment Council, informal Transport Council, followed by informal joint meeting

16-17 June - Environment Council (Provisional agenda)

* Draft directive setting air quality limits for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulates and lead

* Draft directive on the sulphur content of liquid fuels

* Recommendation on keeping of wild animals in zoos

Initial debates expected on:

* Draft directive setting out a framework water policy (common position possible)

* Amended directive on deliberate release of GMOs (see story this issue)
