Tourism firms launch green certificate scheme

Certificate will show commitment to Agenda 21 principles, can be used as step to ISO 14001

Green Globe, a programme of the World Travel & Tourism Council, has launched an independent environmental certification scheme for the industry. The tourism sector is increasingly being placed under the spotlight for its environmental impacts - the European Commission highlighted it as a priority sector for action in its recent review of the EU's environmental action programme. In conjunction with SGS International Certification Services, Green Globe has developed an environmental management standard which is intended to help companies demonstrate their commitment to the principles for sustainable development adopted by governments at the 1992 Earth Summit. It has also been designed to help them take the further step of certification to the international environmental management standard ISO 14001.
