Official EMAS Internet site goes on-line

Commission site lists EMAS-registered firms, verifiers and guidance documents

The European Commission has launched an official Internet site for the EU's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). It offers up-to-date lists - with contact details - of EMAS-registered sites and accredited verifiers in EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. It also provides information on environmental management system standards and describes the additional activities companies which have obtained certification to the international ISO 14001 standard will have to undertake in order to obtain EMAS registration. A discussion of the success of the scheme so far and an explanation of the ongoing review of the EMAS regulation are also given. The site is maintained by the European Organisation for Testing and Certification, which was contracted by the Commission last year to operate its EMAS Help Desk. The Commission says it intends to place additional guidance documents on the site as soon as they are finalised.
