Strong EMAS certification growth continues

Number of certified sites in EU plus Norway up 10% since July, official figures show

The number of industrial and other sites in Europe certified under the EU's eco-management and audit scheme EMAS is continuing to expand at a rapid rate, latest figures from the European Commission show. At the end of October, 1,978 certifications had been notified to the Commission compared with 1,776 at the end of July - an increase of 10% over three months (ENDS Daily 20 August). The figures also show that already large regional differences in certification levels are growing: 83% of new certifications in August, September and October were in Germany, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of all certified sites. The number of certified sites also increased significantly in Austria and the UK over the three-month period. However, certifications remained static in virtually all other countries.
