High Austrian EMAS take-up welcomed

Bartenstein claims an EU lead at national awards for EMAS-registered firms

Austrian environment minister Martin Bartenstein today welcomed strong take-up of the EU's EMAS environmental management standard by Austrian businesses. Austria is a clear second in the European league table of EMAS registrations (ENDS Daily 26 November). Relative to population, Austrian EMAS registrations are in fact equal to Germany's, both being well in advance of other European countries. Mr Bartenstein was speaking at Austria's annual awards ceremony for EMAS-registered firms, the only such scheme organised in the EU. EMAS uptake had been "promising and extraordinarily quick," he said, while Austria is also "clearly ahead" of the rest of the EU in opening up EMAS eligibility from manufacturing industries to all kinds of businesses. The breadth of EMAS eligibility in Austria was broadened earlier this autumn (ENDS Daily 5 October). Austria's commitment to making EMAS registration widely available was reflected in today's award winners. They include a hospital and a decoration company as well as motor manufacturer BMW and an animal rendering firm.
