EMAS registration numbers rise by 10%

Recent growth in EU audit scheme concentrated in Germany, Austria, Norway, Finland

The number of firms registered to the EU's eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS) rose by 10% over the two months to the end of August, according to the latest official figures released by the European Commission's EMAS helpdesk. Germany and Austria continued to be the scheme's main motors, adding 11% and 17% respectively since official figures for the end of June. Meanwhile, two middle-ranking countries in the EMAS league table also turned in strong growth: Norway with 14% and Finland with 42%. Growth in registrations was barely visible in most other countries: in France, the number actually fell by one. As in the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy and some other countries, EMAS has achieved far less success in France than the global ISO 14001 environmental management standard.

* ENDS Daily would like to correct the figure for EMAS registrations in Germany shown in our last review of the scheme's progress, published on 5 July. According to the official EMAS helpdesk statistics, Germany had notified 1603 sites to the end of June, not 1833 as we reported. The revised table for site registrations to the end of June is included below. We apologise for the error in our earlier coverage.
