Ministers take up agri-environment challenge

Germany, UK, agree on need for further CAP reform aimed towards sustainability

German and British ministers yesterday promised to work together to achieve a greener future for farms, taking up EU agriculture commissioner Franz Fischler's challenge to guide the sector towards sustainability (EED 08/05/01).

Renate Künast, German agriculture minister, and Margaret Beckett for the UK were speaking at a conference in London. At the heart of their now joint goal is a shift in EU common agricultural policy (CAP) subsidies away from production and towards sustainable rural development.
