Commission envisions European role in encouraging firms to adopt the "triple-bottom line"

The European Commission underlined the EU's support for greater corporate social responsibility (CSR) yesterday, publishing a green paper on "promoting a European framework" for CSR. More can be done to encourage firms of all sizes to adopt the "triple-bottom line" of economic, social and environmental responsibility, the Commission argues, and Europe can develop a distinctive approach.

A European CSR framework would not mean enacting of a series of new laws, the paper stresses. Rather, the idea is inherently about companies going beyond legal expectations and compliance.
