Environmentalists criticise Commission proposals on pre-legislative consultation

European Commission plans for a shake-up in the EU's approach to regulation were criticised by environmentalists yesterday at the annual conference of coalition group the European Environmental Bureau.

The conference focused on the Commission's recently-published white paper on governance, aimed at combating public "distrust and disinterest" in EU policymaking. Proposed measures include simpler legislation, more "framework" laws, more co-regulation - such as voluntary agreements and standardisation - and a stronger role for the little-known Economic and Social Committee.
