"Low employment impact" from EU waste rules

Policies have neither created nor destroyed many jobs, concludes consultancy study

EU waste management policies have had virtually no net impact on employment over the past decade, concludes a consultancy report released by the European Commission. Increased regulation appears to have created few new positions, nor has it led to many job losses in sectors faced with tougher waste management rules.

The report is one of the last in a series requested by former EU environment commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard, who championed the idea that increased environmental regulation would lead to employment gains (EED 15/06/01).
