Doubt raised over EU tax breaks for ecolabels

Commission tax expert warns against hope of fast progress on lower sales taxes for green products

Encouraging greener products and services through a coordinated EU-wide scheme to lower sales taxes on more environmentally-friendly goods, such as those carrying ecolabels, will not be possible quickly or easily, a European Commission taxation expert warned today.

"It's not something we can do in the immediate future [and] it makes life extremely complicated, with major adjustments necessary at member state level," Anne Bucher, head of tax policy in the Commission's tax and customs union directorate, told a stakeholder conference on integrated product policy (IPP) in the European parliament.
