UK urged to pay up for sustainable fisheries

WWF warns of imminent stock collapses unless government launches major recovery programme

Environmental group WWF warned yesterday of a major collapse in UK fish stocks and urged the government to launch a well-funded strategic recovery programme for all diminishing species. An immediate expenditure increase was the only way to secure long-term benefits for the environment, the fishing industry and the economy, it claimed.

Britain's fishing industry is already in crisis, says WWF. North Sea cod is in an especially parlous situation, it adds, and risks following the example Canadian cod stocks, which collapsed in the early 1990s.
