Industry urged to act on nonyl phenol

UK chemical advisors recommend sectoral phase-outs ahead of expected EU action

UK government advisors called on Friday for industry to agree voluntary phase-outs of the endocrine-disrupting substance nonyl phenol and its ethoxylates (NPEs) on the grounds that expected EU restrictions on marketing and use will be too long in coming.

The UK chemicals stakeholder forum, which includes members from both industry and green NGOs, is the latest body in Europe to press for quick action on nonyl phenol. Norway last week announced what is thought to be Europe's first ban (EED 16/10/01), while Denmark has phased out most uses through voluntary agreements with industry (EED 19/10/01).
