UK sustainable fishing declaration signed

Industry, green groups, commit to long-term recovery plan, urgent action on cod

Stakeholders in the UK fisheries sector met in Edinburgh today and signed a declaration prepared by environmental group WWF committing themselves to developing an "oceans recovery strategy" aimed at reorienting fisheries towards sustainability. A WWF spokesperson told ENDS Europe DAILY that the strategy should take about a year to draw up.

Speaking at the Edinburgh meeting, UK environment minister Margaret Beckett announced that the government intended to designate the EU's first marine special area of conservation (SAC) located over 12 nautical miles from the coast.
