Norway issues VOC solvent regulations

Law implementing EU directive affects new businesses immediately, existing ones from 2007

The Norwegian pollution control authority (SFT) today issued detailed regulations limiting releases of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with the use of organic solvents. The controls were proposed in August to implement the EU's 1999 solvents directive as required by Norway's membership of the European economic area (EED 09/08/01).

"The regulations apply to releases from specific types of industrial activity and not to the use of solvents generally," the agency said in a statement. Existing businesses have until 31 October 2007 to comply; new enterprises are affected immediately.
