Danes plot tax breaks for greener products

Energy efficient cold appliances, double glazing, to be first to benefit under official plan

The Danish government has proposed to encourage sales of energy efficient household cold appliances and double glazed windows through the tax system. The measures would help keep Denmark in the vanguard of EU integrated product policy (IPP) at a time when European Commission proposals for green product tax breaks are meeting opposition (EED 18/10/01).

Denmark has for long been a proponent of environmental taxation. The new proposals respond to an agreement reached this spring by most political parties to develop energy efficiency-related taxes on consumer products.
