Local capacity to be boosted as scientists quantify pollution-related deaths, illnesses

The Dutch health and environment ministries last week pledged to improve local health services' expertise in dealing with environment-related illnesses and accidents. The announcement comes after new research has quantified the health impacts of various types of pollution.

Threats to health from environmental pollution were highlighted earlier this year in the Netherlands' fourth national environmental plan. This identifies them as one of the seven most serious environmental challenges of the coming century (EED 14/06/01).
