New round of world trade talks agreed

EU wins limited environmental negotiations but NGOs say deal is a "disaster" for sustainability

A new, three-year round of world trade talks was approved today, including limited negotiations to clarify the relationship between World trade organisation (WTO) rules and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). Talks between WTO members in Doha, Qatar, ran right through last night and well into today before a final deal could be reached.

Negotiations on environmental issues was a key demand of the EU, against strong opposition from most other countries, both developed and developing. However, the bloc has won only part of the environmental agenda it took to Doha (EED 12/10/01).
