EU parliament plenary round-up

Assembly votes on packaging waste, water pricing, environmental crime, car emissions

This week's plenary session of the European parliament saw major votes on EU chemicals policy and future energy security, both covered in separate articles. Other environmental issues dealt with by the assembly were packaging waste, water pricing, environmental crimes and car emissions.

On packaging, the parliament passed almost unchanged a resolution from its environment committee calling for tough measures to counter packaging waste. One significant addition is a call for EU targets to reduce packaging consumption. The packaging industry has strongly opposed the resolution (EED 09/10/01).
