Appeal court rejects criminal charges of gross negligence brought by government

An appeal court in Andalucia, Spain, has decided that criminal proceedings against 25 people accused of gross negligence following the 1998 spillage from a mine tailings pond at Aznalcollar in southern Spain should be dropped. The appeal had been brought by the environment ministry, the Andalucian regional government and environmental NGOs in response to a local magistrate's decision to suspend criminal investigations into Spain's biggest environmental disaster (EED 08/01/01).
