EU clears dishwasher efficiency initiative

Voluntary agreement to phase out most energy-intensive appliances gets green light

The energy efficiency of EU dishwashing machines is set to improve 20% by the end of next year compared with levels in the late-nineties under an EU voluntary agreement with manufacturers that received final clearance today. The European Commission's competition directorate said the agreement, under which the industry will voluntarily withdraw less energy-efficient models from the market, should be exempt from normal EU rules guaranteeing a competitive market.
