Finnish hazardous waste list expanded

Regulation to comply with EU rules will nearly double tonnage of hazardous wastes

The amount of waste arising in Finland that is classified as hazardous will as much as double from 1 January under a government regulation issued on Thursday. The 836-item new national waste list follows almost exactly the latest EU waste list, a series of amendments to which become binding on all member states at the beginning of next year.

The EU waste list has been updated four times since May 2000 and about 500 materials added, based on national notifications. Passed as Commission or Council decisions, the rules are directly binding on member states (EED 22/05/00).
