EU moots wide controls on nonyl phenols

Risk reduction strategies for five priority substances; EU standards for MTBE tanks recommended

Nonyl phenols and their derivatives should be subject to extensive marketing and usage restrictions, an EU risk assessment has concluded. The assessment does not bind the bloc to introduce legislation on the substances, but at least some controls are almost certain to be proposed by the European Commission in the light of its findings. Often used as industrial detergents, nonyl phenols have come under repeated attack for their toxic effects (EED 22/10/01).
