UK urged to launch green energy drive

Leaked government report backs renewables, energy efficiency, over new nuclear capacity

A major review of UK energy policy has recommended a huge expansion in the role of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Prepared by an influential think-tank in the prime minister's office, the report has still to be officially released - a copy has been seen by ENDS Europe DAILY.

Prime minister Tony Blair launched the energy review in June, arguing that the UK needed to assess prospects for long-term energy security as national petroleum resources dwindle and pressure for greenhouse gas emission cuts intensify (EED 26/06/01). Subsequent debate has raged between pro and anti-nuclear camps seeking to influence the government's conclusions (EED 18/09/01).
