Italian anti-smog action plan launched

Matteoli pledges euros 10m for multiple initiatives aimed at tackling air pollution at source

Italian environment minister Altero Matteoli yesterday launched a euros 10m anti-smog action plan aimed at tackling urban air pollution "at source" and bringing the country rapidly into line with the EU's 1999 directive on fine particulate pollution.

Mr Matteoli pledged to publish the seven-point plan earlier this month after widespread smog forced the imposition of traffic bans in tens of cities and towns (EED 15/01/02). Action was needed to improve air quality "without periodically paralysing cities," he said yesterday.
